John J Doe & Son Ltd is a third generation family business founded in 1942.

We have been making grit at this same site, 6 miles west of Lincoln, since then. We manufacture a range of grits for all sizes of birds including: Turkey, Hen, Pigeon, Chick and Cage Birds. We also supply Oystershell.

In order for birds to digest their food and produce high quality eggs, they need two types of grit: insoluble and soluble.

Insoluble Grits such as flints are taken into the gizzard by the bird and used to grind down the food with a strong muscular action.

Soluble Grits such as Oystershell are a source of calcium which is vital for the production of strong shells. It is digested by the bird to ensure it has sufficient levels of calcium within its body to produce high quality, strong-shelled eggs.
